Each BGAN Terminal is activated by a BGAN SIM CARD that slides into a provided slot on any BGAN Terminal. Like the Sim Card of a cell phone, it is the card itself that holds the account information and not the BGAN terminal. Inmarsat, the owner of the BGAN service, offers BGAN service through their BGAN service provider network, such as Ground Control. Ground Control has deployed state of the art BGAN Servers that optimize any BGAN connection when using our BGAN MAX Utility.

It is possible to swap SIM Cards with any BGAN terminal at any time. This is helpful for keeping accounts separate or for having a backup card in case service suspends for going over limits, or reaching the end of the subscription plan. Swapping Sim Cards is as easy as inserting the card into the terminal and rebooting...if the service provider is the same. If however the SIM Cards are from different BGAN providers, the terminal itself will need a parameter changed using the web interface screen. You may purchase inactive BGAN Sim cards for $50USD and activate them by phone at any time.
There are BGAN Sim Cards that can be pooled under one account. This is an excellent cost savings tool for organizations that have more than one BGAN system. If one or more BGAN terminals are not used, their unused usage can be used by active BGAN terminals that pull from that same SCAP account. SCAP accounts also have extra management benefits like placing limits on individual cards. More on BGAN SCAP Accounts.
All BGAN Sim Cards start off as dynamic, which means their assigned IP address changes each time they connect to the BGAN network. However, a BGAN Sim card may have a Static IP (or Public IP) address where the assigned IP address is permanent and unchanging. This is useful for VPN and other applications that rely on Public IP addressing. The general rule is if you do not know what a static IP address is, then you most likely do not need one.
