Ground Control - Private Satellite Networking & VPN
Ground Control is the leading HughesNet provider to offer
Private Network
Architectures for your organizations unique needs. Hughes
has been
in the Satellite Data Industry for 20 years and operates
over 9 satellite
systems. Ground Control specializes in providing the unique
satellite
solution your organization requires.
Below are several common
architectures Ground Control offers.
Total Private
Satellite Network (TPN)

A Total Private Network bypasses the Internet with
a direct T1 (or larger)
connection from the corporate network to the Satellite
Network Operations
Center ( NOC).
With a TPN, the client sites (there may have more than
one) do not require
a VPN client because the connection is already secure.
In creating a TPN, all that is required is a backhaul T1
terrestrial data line
from the corporate office to the Network Operations Center,
(located in
Las Vegas, Nevada). T1 backhaul pricing, even across the
United States
is normally between $500 and $1500 a month.

Enhanced VPN
Enhanced VPN uses client chosen VPN hardware (router
to router) to connect
from its corporate data center to the satellite Network
Operations Center
to provide a secure connection between the data center
and the client systems.

Point-to-Point Total Private
Network
Another topology to consider is the Point-to-Point
network. Instead of
connecting to the NOC via a terrestrial link, you may connect
via
satellite... and then back out to your client sites without
ever touching
a terrestrial network (besides the NOC itself).

The greatest advantage to this solution is that it is highly
secure. The biggest
disadvantage is that traffic must make two round trips
to the satellite from one
site to the other. For requirements that are not time sensitive,
this is an
excellent solution. Round trip time will be approximately
1.5 to 3 seconds.

Managed VPN
Managed VPN is similiar to Enhanced VPN except that
the existing customer
VPN hardware connects to a secure Ground Control VPN concentrator
located
at the NOC, minimizing initial hardware costs. Multiple
types of VPN boxes
may connect to this concentrator. Also, the gateway is
shared among everyone
connected through the concentrator at the NOC.
