  Satellite Internet - Contention Ratio

A Contention Ratio (written as 10:1, 20:1, 400:1) refers to the number of subscribers that are sharing the same sized connection channel at the same time. Many satellite providers have contention ratios that are in the stratosphere, sometimes approaching 400 to 1, making the service often unusable. Always ask for what the typical speeds are if you are shopping providers. Ground Control uses iDirect dynamic frequency hopping to increase the size of the channel that is shared so speeds are more available than traditional consumer services.
