Getting data from remote locations back to base

From high altitude weather balloons to data buoys, rain gauges to turbidity sensors, the amount of data being captured by meteorological sensors is extensive, and the reasons for capture are similarly broad.

From predicting weather patterns to measuring glacier thickness; testing the quality of drinking water to plotting the best trajectory for a shipping fleet; all share the same challenge of transmitting data from remote locations back to base. If cellular connectivity is available, it’s often spotty, and a backup is essential to ensure uninterrupted data flow.

If your sensors are relatively stationary, you have a substantial amount of choice about how to transmit data from the field to your base of operations; both high and low earth orbit satellites will meet your requirements, so the choice comes down to latency, volume of data, existing infrastructure etc. BGAN M2M is a great choice, operating on L-Band frequency, which is as reliable as satellite gets (that’s very reliable, for the absence of doubt!).

If your sensors are on the move, low earth orbit satellites are a great choice, as they have pole to pole connectivity; in this case, choose a product like the RockREMOTE which combines both cellular and satellite connectivity in a single ruggedized unit, and is Iridium Certus enabled – also leveraging L-Band frequency.
