Ground Control is famed for our satellite connectivity, but there are many occasions where cellular is the better option: reliable, low cost, and easy to implement. Our cellular IoT applications include asset management, remote plant monitoring, traffic management and route optimization, workforce safety and efficiency, supply chain automation and assembly control.
As the graph from Statista illustrates, this is a rapidly growing market, with the fastest growing being ‘NB-IoT’, or Narrowband-IoT. NB-IoT is a relatively new technology that works well for transferring small amounts of information – the satellite equivalent would be Iridium’s Short Burst Data (SBD). LTE-M technology fulfils a similar function, but LTE is much faster.
GSM as a technology for IoT applications is declining, but still highly viable; it supports voice calls and is lower cost, as it uses less data than LTE.

Several of Ground Control’s proprietary devices are able to use both cellular and satellite connections to transmit and receive data. They will use cellular when within range, and switch to satellite for remote areas. This means users pay less, as cellular connectivity is lower cost than satellite, but don’t miss out of the complete reliability offered by leveraging satellite communication.
