Airtime recommendations

From what you’ve said, we think Iridium might be a good choice for your remote connectivity requirements. Iridium offers several services specifically aimed at IoT applications: Short Burst Data and Certus 100.

Short Burst Data is intended for very small amounts of IoT data, and is very cost effective. Certus 100 is more flexible, as it offers both message-based and IP-based transmissions, and can accommodate larger volumes of IoT data.

Device recommendations

If your data requirements are very small – bytes rather than kilobytes – then the RockBLOCK series is a great choice. There are ‘naked’ versions designed to be built into your enclosure, and fully ruggedized options for permanent outdoor installation.

If your data requirements are larger, the RockREMOTE family is a better choice. Similarly, there’s a ‘naked’ version, and fully ruggedized versions. These highly flexible devices cover a broad range of fixed and mobile applications.

Airtime recommendations

From what you’ve said we think Iridium or Inmarsat (soon to be re-branded Viasat) might be a good choice for your remote connectivity requirements. Iridium offers two services for IoT applications: Short Burst Data (SBD) and Certus 100. SBD is intended for very small amounts of IoT data, and is very cost effective. Certus 100 is more flexible, as it offers both message-based and IP-based transmissions, and can accommodate larger volumes of IoT data.

Inmarsat/Viasat similarly has several IoT services, notably IsatData Pro (IDP) and BGAN M2M. IDP is a message-based service, BGAN M2M is a TCP/IP-based service. Inmarsat/Viasat’s satellites are in a higher orbit than Iridium, so the latency is a little longer, but they offer higher data rates.

Device recommendations

We designed and built the RockREMOTE family of satellite IoT terminals to leverage the flexibility and coverage of the Iridium Certus 100 service. There’s an OEM version, for building into your enclosure, and fully ruggedized versions intended for permanent outdoor installations.

For a BGAN M2M device we would suggest looking at either the Cobham Explorer 540, or the Hughes 9502. We have used both devices extensively in the field, and recommend them for robustness, interoperability and ease of operation.

Airtime recommendations

We recommend that you review Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD) for your airtime requirements. This is a low latency, globally available service designed for small amounts of IoT data. It is a message-based service, which is highly cost-effective, and suitable for both fixed and mobile assets.

Device recommendations

The RockBLOCK family of SBD-enabled devices are worth investigating. Starting with RockBLOCK 9603, our smallest and lightest modem designed to be built into your enclosure, through to the RockBLOCK Switch. This is designed for permanent outdoor installation, and has digital inputs to make the retrieval of industrial IoT data simple, plus an open drain output that can trigger alerts or activate devices remotely.

Airtime recommendations

We recommend that you review Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD) or Inmarsat/Viasat IsatData Pro (IDP) for your airtime requirements. Both are designed for small amounts of IoT data, and are message-based services, which is highly cost-effective.

SBD is lower latency, as the orbiting satellites are closer to Earth; whereas IDP allows you to transmit more data in each message. SBD works well in both fixed and mobile applications; IDP is best suited to fixed, or slow moving mobile applications.

Device recommendations

The RockBLOCK family of SBD-enabled devices are worth investigating. Starting with RockBLOCK 9603, our smallest and lightest modem designed to be built into your enclosure, through to the RockBLOCK Switch, with digital inputs and outputs for remote monitoring and control.

Our recommended IDP devices are the ST 2100, which delivers plug-and-play functionality with a simple AT command set, or the ST 6100. This is fully programmable and can be integrated into diverse custom solutions.

We recommend that you review Iridium Certus 100 for your airtime requirements, as it’s extremely flexible. This is a low latency, globally available service that can accommodate both small and larger amounts of IoT data. It can be used to send data via TCP/IP, and also offers a messaging service called IMT. It is suitable for fixed and mobile assets.

We recommend that you review Iridium Messaging Transport (IMT) for your airtime requirements. With IMT, you can send and receive messages of up to 100 kB – currently the largest capacity of any L-band, message-based service. It’s low latency, globally available, and effective in both fixed and mobile applications.

Device recommendations

The RockREMOTE family of Iridium Certus 100-enabled devices would be worth exploring. From the Mini OEM, designed to be built into your enclosure, to the RockREMOTE Rugged, designed for permanent outdoor installation, these highly flexible devices cover a broad range of fixed and mobile applications.

Airtime recommendations

For the volumes of data you need to transmit, you need to look at VSAT solutions. VSAT antennae are large, can be sensitive to weather conditions, and require mains power, but transmit large volumes of data. In terms of satellite network operators, Starlink, SES or Eutelsat/OneWeb might be suitable for your requirements; you can also talk to us about optimizing your transmissions to bring your data volumes down.

Device recommendations

If you have mains power, and you don’t need dedicated bandwidth or particularly stringent security measures, you could investigate Starlink terminals. As they’re not traditionally IoT terminals, we don’t feature them on our site, but have sourced them for customers for whom we’re a trusted supplier.

If you are working with critical national infrastructure, we would recommend reviewing the TSAT 3500. This delivers a private satellite network – the highest level of data security available in satellite communications – and has a very low operating cost.
