The Iridium NEXT Constellation

For the last 15 years, we’ve been using Iridium’s original constellation of satellites to give truly global data coverage for our customers. Over time, technology changes and improves, and we are pleased to see that Iridium are moving forward in their plans to replace the entire 66-satellite constellation over the next two to three years – providing a solid and stable platform for Rock Seven (now trading as Ground Control)’s products and services over the decades to come.

Our customers won’t experience any downtime during the changeover process between old and new satellites – the entire constellation and service will be maintained whilst new satellites are flown into place. Existing equipment will also work seamlessly with the new satellite network – customers won’t need to change any hardware or coding.

Working in close collaboration with prime contractor Thales Alenia Space and launch provider SpaceX, Iridium is on track to fully replace its current satellite constellation and continues to achieve key milestones in its comprehensive plan for funding, building, and deploying Iridium NEXT by the end of 2017.
