The Explorer 500 is a popular mid-sized BGAN terminal with broadband Internet speeds 94.5% as fast as the fastest BGAN terminal. This is the terminal to purchase if traveling to extreme environments.

The Explorer 500 is a time tested ruggedized BGAN terminal perfect extreme environments. Frozen tundra, blazing deserts, excessively humid rainforests, the Explorer has been used by 1000's to keep them connected to the outside world. It has an environmental Ingress rating of IP 54, which means it is protected from
splashing water and
dust from any direction. While the 500 does not have an integrated wireless access point, this has not kept it from being on of the most popular terminals on the market. |
The display on top of the Explorer 500 makes pointing quite easy... Here are the steps:
1. Turn power on by pressing the power button.
2. An audible signal strength tone will sound, and the display will show a signal strength bar (dBHz reading).
3. Sweep the sky with the terminal until the signal tone increase in frequency.
4. Get the highest signal strength reading possible (using the dBHz scale), and then press OK (Register) button.
5. Run the BGAN Launchpad software from a connected laptop to connect to the Internet.

This Explorer 500 uses a D-Link Wireless Access Point for connecting in-range devices. Some BGAN terminals have a Wi-Fi access built-in, such as the Hughes 9202, or Explorer 700. |

The Explorer 300 and 500 BGAN systems have proven to operate quite well in polar regions. We recommend purchasing more than one battery or a solar recharger if you are in a no-power location.

The Explorer 500 is 95% as fast as the fastest BGAN system. News broadcasters often upload recorded video, however, for broadcasters that wish to stream live video, we recommend the Explorer 700 or Hughes 9201 for superior streaming capabilities. |
