BGAN Streaming Services

Bundle Plans from Ground Control allow all BGAN services, including streaming services, to deduct from a bundle account at the below listed rates. A minimum of $1,500 is required to open a bundle account and there’s no maximum amount. Additional funds may be added at any time. The valid period is one year from activation.

All BGAN terminals have access to streaming services, which are unshared channels over the BGAN satellite link to the internet backbone. Live event broadcasters use streaming channels to avoid audio and video dropouts during a video feed. While streaming video is possible over the standard shared BGAN service, it’s sometimes unpredictable, and dropouts can occur.

Streaming services connect to the internet just like standard BGAN services do, but streaming services are charged by the minute of use, unlike standard BGAN services which charge by the megabyte transferred.

BGAN HDR Comparison Video

BGAN HDR – 650Kbps Speeds

BGAN HDR, or ‘high data rates’, are available for the Explorer 710 BGAN Terminal and the Hughes 9211 BGAN Terminal with unshared channel speeds of 650Kbps. Note that only the Explorer 710 may use the 650Kpbs speeds in both directions (aka HDR full-channel symmetric). This is the fastest speed possible for any portable satellite terminals and increases the fidelity of live video broadcasting or the speed of a simple large file transfer from any location on the globe.

Our users have found success streaming live video over BGAN using ‘OBS Studio’ freeware to YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Live, and other live services. OBS Studio recommended configuration: 480P with a max bitrate around 650Kbps and a framerate of 30 or less.

Accessing connectivity options

Pictured is the Explorer 710 web interface screen (URL: showing all data connectivity options. There are 4 types of HDR services available (HDR Half Asymmetric, HDR Half Symmetric, HDR Full Asymmetric, HDR Full Symmetric). For example, you can choose a fast upload channel, and a slower download channel with the Asymmetric services if streaming video one direction so you only pay for the data speeds you need.

The web interface of all BGAN terminals is used initiate streaming services as no software is required for connecting to the BGAN terminal web interface besides a browser. Streaming service are often greyed out since streaming services must be enabeled by Ground Control. This is to protect customers using pay-per-Megabyte service from accidentally selecting a streaming service… Only “Bundled Accounts” shown on this page may use streaming service.
